The home building process
How to avoid ‘decision-fatigue’ when building a new home
Have you decided to build a new home? Congratulations! It will likely be the first of hundreds of decisions you’ll need to make before you collect the keys and move into your brand-new digs.
Despite being an incredibly exciting process, decision fatigue comes with the ‘new home’ territory as one of the biggest barriers for people building a new home and can often result in costly blowouts to the timeframe and budget, according to Deanna Michaels, Rawson Homes Internal Selections Manager.
“Customers today have more choice than ever when it comes to personalising their home design and making it their own, which is a great thing,” Deanna says.
“But with so many different options at multiple stages of the design process, these choices can be quite overwhelming, and even paralysing for some people.”
First there are the big picture decisions such as the style and floorplan of your new home. Hamptons or homestead façade? One storey or two? Second living area or extra bedroom? How can you zone the house to suit your family now, and in the future?
Next comes the internal selections. From bathroom tiles and tapware to kitchen sinks and splashbacks, each decision seems to unlock five more choices that need to be made.

And finally, there are the personalised finishes such as colour schemes, carpets, floor coverings and light fittings – all those things that will help make your home your own.
Starting with a blank sheet of paper can overwhelm even the most seasoned home builders, which is why Rawson Homes redesigned its Custom Collections range to comprise a simple three-step process: MyHome.
“We’re still offering the same number of choices, but we’ve bundled them up to help you quickly determine the home you want, the style you like and the features you can’t live without,” Deanna says.
Step 1. Choose your home
Take your pick from more than 150 award-winning single and double-storey homes, and then customise the floor plan to suit your family’s needs. Start by checking out Rawson Homes range of home designs online, and then get in touch to arrange a visit to one of our display homes.
Step 2. Choose your collection
The Custom Collections range has been broken into three different collections. The Classic Collection is the most budget-friendly solution but doesn’t compromise on quality, offering a great range of standard inclusions such as Westinghouse appliances and smart storage solutions. The Luxury Collection comes with some of the most popular upgrades such as Caesarstone benchtops and higher ceilings, while the Prestige Collection is the ultimate package of top-of-the-line finishes and appliances.
Step 3. Choose your upgrades
This is where you can personalise different parts of the Classic and Luxury collections with upgrades to suit your lifestyle. Spend a lot of time cooking and entertaining? Level up your kitchen with AEG appliances. Like to unwind with a pamper session at the end of the day? Indulge in a freestanding Caroma bathtub.
